Ham and Cheese Chowder

Serves 4-6


  • 1 ham hock/bone (optional)
  • 1½ cups ham
  • 1½ cups grated tasty cheese
  • 2 potatoes (medium sized), peeled & diced into 1cm cubes
  • 3T butter
  • 1 cup onion, chopped
  • 3T flour
  • freshly ground pepper
  • 3 cups milk
  • parsley, finely chopped, to garnish
  • croutons to garnish


  1. In a saucepan place one cup of water, ham hock/bone (optional) and cubed potatoes and bring to the boil.  Reduce heat and simmer till potatoes are tender (about 8 minutes).
  2. Remove the bone, and drain the potatoes, keeping the liquid.
  3. Melt butter in the saucepan.  Add onion, and cook for approximately 5 minutes until transparent -do not brown.
  4. Blend in flour, and cook, stirring for 2 minutes.  Add pepper and reserved potato water (add additional water if required to make a complete cup) stirring.  Add milk, and mix well.
  5. Bring to the boil, stirring.
  6. Reduce the heat so that the mixture simmers, and add potatoes, ham and cheese.  Stir until cheese melts (about 5 minutes).
  7. Garnish with croutons or parsley.
